The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
True Crime, Docuseries
Synopsis: A boy's murder and the trials of his guardians and social workers prompt questions about the system's protection of vulnerable children.
Thoughts: This one really brought tears to my eyes, and by the end of the docuseries I was full-on sobbing. Cases of child abuse are always hard to stomach but this one was especially heartbreaking. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez made me really reflect on how unreliable the justice and protection system is for vulnerable children. There were multiple times were abuse and neglect were obvious but no intervention was ever taken. This docuseries will leave you somber, angry, and have a little less faith in humanity.
Don’t Fuck With Cats ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
True Crime, Docuseries
Synopsis: A twisted criminal's gruesome videos drive a group of amateur online sleuths to launch a risky manhunt that brings them into a dark underworld.
Thoughts: Don’t Fuck With Cats had my full attention the entire time. I loved the concept of a group of animal lovers coming together through Facebook to try to track down a criminal. As each episode passes, the darker it gets; leading to a big plot twist at the end that left me speechless. The docuseries does a great job of leading you through each step of the manhunt where you can’t predict the ending before actually finishing the series.
Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
True Crime, Docuseries
Synopsis: Stories from survivors fuel an examination of how convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein used his wealth and power to carry out his abuses.
Thoughts: It’s no surprise that powerful men have used their money and status to exploit women. Yet, Jeffrey Epstein’s case brought to my attention just how orchestrated his system of finding vulnerable girls to ‘recruit’ for his sexual roster, as well as how many other powerful men were involved in his doings. It’s upsetting knowing that the men that were involved in Epstein’s schemes are still in powerful positions and the victims have not gotten justice for their lives being ruined by men’s greed.
How to Fix a Drug Scandal ⭐️⭐️⭐️
True Crime, Docuseries
Synopsis: Two drug lab chemists' crimes cripple a state's judicial system and blur the lines of justice for lawyers, officials, and thousands of prison inmates.
Thoughts: The cases of Sonja Farak and Annie Dookhan were really insightful into the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. For Dookhan, she fell into her need for self-actualization which caused her to dismiss the quality of her work. For Farak, her mental health took a bad turn and caused her to abuse the drugs she had access to. Stories like this make the need for wellness checks among pharmaceutical professionals even greater.
